Assignment:

Imagine that you read about someone who has committed a terrible crime. The person's defense attorney presents extremely convincing evidence that the defendant had a terrible childhood and suffered greatly at the hands of people who should have cared for the defendant. Many people think evidence like this serves to partially excuse the defendant's actions. Why is that? Is it because we really think that for a person to be fully responsible for a choice, there must be no significant influences on the choice?
