Discussion - Public Participation

Public participation in government includes much more than voting. Although voting is a very important factor in how we the people control our government, other participatory options such as attending and participating in public meetings, letter writing, assisting with election campaigns, and engaging in political marketing are examples of public participation.

Is public participation important in our government system? Why/why not? Our lesson discusses unconventional/direct and conventional/indirect participation. Please share your experiences and observations concerning these two types of participation and which ones are the most effective in influencing government?

As you know, voting is an indirect approach to participation, it is easy to do, and it is the way we predominately control our government. However, our voting turnout "normally" is around 50 percent with a variance of a few points? Why is this? What can or should be done to increase voter turnout? Any additional comments/thoughts concerning public participation and voting?
