A study of the response time for emergency care for heart attack victims in a large U.S. city reported that therewas a 1 in200 chanceof thepatient surviving the attack. That is, for a person suffering a heart attack in the city, P(survival) = 1/200 = .05. The low survival rate was attributed to many factors associated with large cities, such as heavy traffic, misidentification of addresses, and the use of phones for which the 911 operator could not obtain an address. The study documented the 1/200 probability based on a study of 20,000 requests for assistance by victims of a heart attack.
