John is director of the local health department's communicable disease program. He has just been notified by Dr. Miller of a case of pertussis in an eighth-grade child. John is working with Dr. Miller, Ms. Gonzalez(the school nurse), and the State Department of Health to follow up on this pertussis case.John recognizes that it is imperative to follow up with case contacts to prevent transmission of the disease to others in the community. Humans are the reservoir for this disease, and transmission occurs via direct contact with respiratory droplets.
