Professional Development Assignment Description (40 points):

There are 2 parts to the assignment. Note that part two is asking for six sources to be reviewed. Please place both assignments into one paper. The different questions should be clearly marked so your professor knows which question you are addressing.

1. Read the attached article by Sendelbach and Funk (2013) and the following review of the article. Using the skills you have sharpened in all the previous modules, note the errors in the review and provide suggestions to strengthen the essay.

I chose to write about this article on alarm fatigue. It talks about all the alarms that go off daily and how this can cause patient deaths because too many alarms means we just ignore them but sometimes they're real and that patient may die because we don't answer the alarm. I'm afraid this could happen on the unit where I work as a respiratory therapist. We're so busy with our new computerized charting that we don't have time for ventilator alarms that are always going off for no reason. The article says one research study found the percentage of false alarms ranges from 72% to 99.4%, which creates a "cry wolf" situation in which staff will respond to the alarm the percentage of time they deem it reliable. There are several suggestions for reducing alarm fatigue: changing ECG electrodes daily, individualizing alarm parameters, using interprofessional teams, human factors engineering, and measurement. I think these are all good suggestions, but they don't all pertain to respiratory therapy.

2. Complete the attached table to summarize the literature you found for your synthesis paper prior to writing your literature review. You should have at least six sources, as identified in your annotated bibliography.

Synthesis Paper Assignment (20 points): Literature Review: Description: (please make any and all corrections that are needed based on your professor's comments from the last submission)

Prepare the Literature Review section of your paper. Begin with an introductory paragraph that describes your search parameters and what databases were used. Be sure to avoid first person (I, we, me, us, etc.). Include at least one paragraph for each of your sources chosen in your Annotated Bibliography. This is not a repeat of the annotations in the annotated bibliography, but should be written as an essay that flows easily from one point to the next. Remember, your literature review should be at least seven paragraphs, but not more than twelve paragraphs. Each paragraph should be at least three sentences in length, but only contain one or two main points and support. Review your APA resources for how to properly cite references in your text.

Also prepare your reference page. Please review your APA resources as mentioned previously. Submit the entire document. However, only the literature review and reference page will be graded in this module.
