Both Fiat and The Michelin Group each had their own reasons for attempting new beginnings. In 2014, Fiat merged with Chrysler to form the Fiat-Chrysler Automobile company. These companies joined forces and combined, technology, manufacturing platforms, corporate resources and financial resources. Although Fiat was an established and well known brand all around the world, it had struggled financially in 2012. The company also was not as efficient and had an inferior product compared to other automobile manufacturers. Forming the partnership with Chrysler allowed it to go through a necessary corporate restructuring and expand its market share. On the other hand, the Michelin Group faced decreasing sales, consecutive quarters of poor financial results, and started to fall behind competitors. The company hired Olivier Chalon to lead their North American division to fix these issues. However, Chalon struggled to successfully implement his management style that worked in Europe. His employees and subordinates did not respond well to him and he struggled due to the cultural differences. However, in the end both companies are improving. Through their partnership and alliance, Fiat-Chrysler Automobile has become the seventh largest automobile manufacturer in the world with expanding market share. Meanwhile, Michelin recently purchased a tire manufacturing company in Indonesia, allowing it to increase its production capacity and recapture market share.
