How did Napoleon both preserve and undermine the ideals of the French Revolution?
This is what i have so far:The French Revolution happen in 1789 and ended in 1799, it established the first modern European republic and signaled the death of feudalism. In the social aspect of the French Revolution, taxes were high, but so was the prices that increase making the fall in value of money and classes not being equal with each other. French society was heavily stratified, and the possibility of class mobility (the ability to move up in the world) did not exist. With enlightenment came a questioning and eventual rejection of the traditional ideas about aristocracy, monarchy and religious authority. There were some causes in the french revolution, one cause was the spread of enlightenment. Also, there was a lack of food in France which put everyone on edge. Another reason was that France had debt that they could not manage and were forced to tax the French citizens a high amount that the citizens felt was unfair. Lastly, like the American Revolution in later years, the lower classes were sick of having no power and say in government just as they were starting to despise the royal government even more, thus leading them to revolution. They believed that they couldn't live this mistreated any more so they revolted. The classes were properly the main causes in the french revolution because of the vast separation between the wealth present in the population and the aristocracy.Napolean was a dictator that in time got absolute rule over France. he preserved the ideals of the French Revolution by overthrowing the government of that time and giving the average and lower class citizens who were behind the revolution more say in the government. He also preserved the classes by abolishing the aristocracy and making it possible for anyone for anyone to achieve fame. However, he undermined the ideals of the French Revolution by taking control himself and not sharing his power with the people such as a democracy.
