Problem Assignment - Masonry Compressive Behavior
Problem One - Using the Hilsdorf equation, prepare a plot of prism compressive strength vs. unit strength for typical concrete block masonry and clay-unit masonry. Assume typical unit heights of 7.63" for block, 2.25" for clay brick and 0.375" for mortar thickness. Plot relations for Type M, S and N mortars (assume mortar compressive strengths equal to 2500psi, 1800psi and 750psi for Types M, S and N respectively). Consider a coefficient of non-uniformity equal to 1.0. Assume that the tensile strength of concrete block is equal to one-tenth of its compressive strength, and that the tensile strength of clay brick is equal to one-twentieth of its compressive strength.
Problem Two - Superimpose on the plots of Problem One, relations between prism and unit strength as specified by the TMS 402 code. Comment on differences between the code and theoretical values.
Problem Three - Explain how the Hilsdorf formulation differs from that presented in the paper by McNary and Abrams (April 1985) and why the Hilsdorf formulation should result in a higher prism compressive strength.
