Experiment: preparation of benzoic acid
Introduction:-this experiment is designed both as a preparative and an investigative project. Two outcomes are expected: preparation of benzoic acid from bromobenzene and analysis of the by-products of a grignard reaction, an integral part of the synthetic procedure.
Part 1: synthetic procedure
A. Grignard reagents as nucleophiles: benzoic acid
B. Grignard reagents as strong bases
C. Isolation and purification of benzoic acid
Experimental procedure:
Preparation of phenyl magnesium bromide
Carbonation of phenyl magnesium bromide; hydrolysis of reaction mixture
Isolation of benzoic acid
Part ii: optional gc/ms analysis of by-products in the organic layer
