Portraiture serves important roles in ancient art, but almost universally, it serves to create the presence of the person. Great kings place their portraits at crossroads. Egyptians create portraits of themselves in their tombs. Even today, we often send photos of ourselves to our friends and family, a little reminder that we exist. Consider what you have learned this week, and discuss the various roles of portraits in ancient Egyptian culture. What do these various portraits communicate about Egyptians and their society?
