Nitrogen, a common pollutant from the combustion of auto fuels, produces several oxides. Assume that nitric oxide is the most common oxide formed. Prepare a written response to the following questions:

  1. How does nitric oxide (NO) contribute to the creation of acid precipitation if it undergoes similar transformation steps as sulphur dioxide?
  2. Choose one of the above reactions, and demonstrate that a redox reaction is also occurring in the process of creating acid rain. Do this by writing the balanced half-reactions.
  3. An action plan is a strategy that compiles a series of well thought out steps that can be taken to accomplish a goal. Action plans are used at all levels of government; they are used by community organizations and they are also used on an individual level. Nitrogen oxides are factors in both acid rain and smog formation. A reduction in nitrogen oxides is needed. Research and formulate a personal action plan that you could follow to help cut down on emissions of this dangerous gas.
