A vertically mounted piston-cylinder device contains 1.5 kg of water and is being heated over a coal burning stove. During the process, 75 kJ of heat is transferred to the water and heat losses from the side walls amount to 9 kJ. The piston rises as a result of evaporation and 5000 N-m of work is done by the vapor. Determine the final energy of the system (i.e. water) if its initial energy was 419 kJ/kg.

Compression-ignition engine operates on ideal diesel cycle : A six-cylinder, four-stroke, 4.5-L compression-ignition engine operates on the ideal diesel cycle with a compression ratio of 17. The air is at 95 kPa and 55oC at the beginning of the compression process and the engine speed is 2000 rpm. The engine u..
Highest possible average flow velocity in the duct : A central heating system has a 60 W fan used to circulate air through the building ducts. A previous flow analysis showed that the fan needs to raise the air pressure by 50 Pa to maintain proper flow through the ducts. The fan is located in a horizon..

Carbon diffuses in iron via an interstitial mechanism : Carbon diffuses in iron via an interstitial mechanism—for FCC iron from one octahedral site to an adjacent one. In Section 4.3 (Figure 4.3a), we note that two general sets of point coordinates for this site are 0 ½ 1 and ½ ½ ½ . Specify the family of..
Determine internal energy change as saturated liquid steam : Determine the internal energy change as saturated liquid steam at 600F goes to a two phase mixture of quality 0.40 at 600F. Saturated vapor water at 130?C undergoes an isometric process to 0.4 MPa. Determine the final fluid phase and the enthalpy cha..
Determine the final temperature of the ammonia : Ammonia vapor in a piston-cylinder assembly undergoes a constant-pressure process from saturated vapor at 10 bars. The work is +16.5kJ/kg. Changes in kinetic and potential energy are negligible. Determine (a) the final temperature of the ammonia in d..
Force and its location on the cork due to saltwater : A small, narrow, flat-bottomed fishing boat is loaded down with two crew member and a catch fish.
