In this experiment, you will be observing the chemical reaction that takes place when steel wool is exposed to oxygen and other corrosive agents.
In this investigation you will set up several comparative mini-experiments, which you will observe after 24 hours. The lab will require you use some common household substances as oxidizing agents. Although these chemicals are commonly used in the home, they should be used with caution. It is mandatory you read the label before using any chemical and follow the precautions outlined. It is also suggested you search the Internet for the MSDS information for the active ingredient in your oxidizing agent.
In this lab you will work with the listed materials in addition to selecting an oxidizing/corrosive substance to test with the steel wool (iron) and copper metal. You will be required to form your own hypothesises based on the lab purposes and record your observations in the chart provided.
