The action potentials are nothing more than a temporary shift from negative to positive in the neuron's membrane potential caused by ions suddenly flowing in and out of the neuron. It is a massive momentary reversal of a neuron's potential from about -70 mV to about +50 mV.

A firing of a neuron is triggered when a nerve impulse is sent out from a cell body, the sodium channels in the cell membrane open and the positive sodium cells surge into the cell. once the cell reaches a certain threshold, an action potential will fire, sending the electrical signal down the axon. The repolarization of a neuron is the resting phrase. this is when the sodium channels close and potassium rushes out of the cell to temporarily re-establish the membrane potential. The potassium channels closes, preventing further loss of positive ions, the sodium-potassium is turned off.
