Emile Durkheim (1858-1917), a founder of sociology, believed that modernization produced social problems such as suicide. He compiled data from several European countries and published Suicide (1897/1951), a book that helped establish quantification in social science disciplines. The data in this problem were created so that the conclusion you reach will mimic that of Durkheim (and present-day sociologists).
On variables such as electricity consumption, newspaper circulation, and gross national product, 13 countries were classified as to their degree of modernization (low, medium, or high). The numbers in the table are annual suicide rates per 100,000 persons. For the data in the table, name the independent variable, the number of levels it has, and the dependent variable. Compute SStot, SStreat and SSerror.

Find the probability that fewer than 10 of those sampled currently have access to online services.
Why do we use graphical displays of the data from our research, such as Pareto Charts, Bar Charts, Pie Charts, Flow Charts, or Process Control Charts?
Let X1, ... , Xn be i.i.d. r.v.'s with (?nite) unknown mean m and (?nite) known variance s 2, and suppose that n is large. i) Use the CLT to construct a con?dence interval for m with approximate con?dence coef?cient 1 - a;
How is the standard deviation of the data affected if there are disproportionately more 0s and 5s? Why can't we use the methods of this section to test that the last digits of the sample data have a standard deviation equal to 3?
1. Let X denote the mean of a random sample of size 100 from a distri bution that is x2(50). Compute an approximate value of Pr (49 X 51).
(a) Show that this second probability statement can be written as Pr (nS2/b tr nS2/a) = 0.95. (b) If n = 9 and s2 = 7.63, find a 95 percent confidence interval for u2.
Write down the estimated regression equation, and verbally interpret the intercept and the slope coefficients (in terms of geysers and eruption times).
List the requirements that should be met for this hypothesis test. Write the null and alternative hypothesis. Calculate the test statistic and the P-value. Label each accordingly
When the results are collected, two of the students discover that their condence intervals dont even overlap. A student in the course who is also taking Stat 311 claims that this result is not surprising. Do you agree?
