Question

There are 2 activities you will complete for this lab: a muscle fatigue activity, and a contraction type activity.

Finally, you will be asked to do some math, but the formulae are laid out very clearly (I think!). And you WILL NOT be tested on any calculations. I included these calculations for this activity because it is a nice way to connect all of these concepts, and I thought you'd get a kick out of considering actual ATP molecules and the fact that you are producing WATTS of power!

A. Questions for Activity 1 (Muscle Fatigue):

1. How much did your ability to squeeze decline between the first 30-second interval and the last?

2. How much work did you do/energy did you expend squeezing the clothespin?

In Joules?
In Kilocalories?

3. How many moles of ATP did you burn squeezing the clothespin?

4. How much power did you expend?

5. How many trials did you do before the number of squeezes per 30 seconds started to decline?

6. Do you think your performance would have been affected if someone had been there cheering you on?

B. Questions for Activity 2 (Types of Contractions):

Identify 2 specific muscles that were activated to perform your exercise.

1. In which part/s of your exercise were your chosen muscles engaging in concentric isotonic contraction? Explain.

2. In which part/s of your exercise were your chosen muscles engaging in eccentric isotonic contraction? Explain.

3. In which part/s of your exercise were your chosen muscles engaging in isometric contraction? Explain.

C. Wrap-up question

What is at least one thing that you found interesting, fun, inspiring, confusing, annoying, or.... about this activity?
