ASSIGNMENT 1:
Assignment 1 entails preparing a presentation and a report.
The Presentation. This is not assessed, but needs tutor approval before the final submission of the essay. It can be a powerpoint presentation but must not take more than FIVE MINUTES (students will be told they have 30 seconds left and told to stop when the five minute limit is reached).
The Report. The report element involves investigating and synthesizing the (often substantial) literature on the chosen topic. You need to demonstrate your knowledge of the ethical issues affecting your chosen sector. This will require using ProQuest or another academic search engine (e.g. Emerald) - not Google or Google Scholar - to develop your research. Ask the librarians for help if you need it. The Business school acting librarian is Shelagh Hewson.
Structure. A possible structure could be:
• Introduction. Outlining the nature of the sector and the key ethical issues.
• Stakeholder Analysis. Demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the key stakeholder groups that are affected by the identified ethical issues.
• Normative Theories. Select Consequentialist, Non-consequentialist theories (Utilitarianism, Egoism, Ethics of Duty, Ethics of Rights and Justice and Virtue ethics) that can be applied to the sector. An equal representation of theories is required from these two categories with reference to issues that need to be addressed. Critically analyse ethical frameworks that have been developed to analyse the business conduct and synthesize ideas to create responses to ethical dilemmas.
Apply expertise to problem solving of contemporary ethical dilemmas faced by organisations, arising from the internal and external environments in which they operate.
Demonstrate a critical understanding of Action, Intentions, Circumstances, and analyse the consequences of the application of this theory (Triple Fountain theory). This aspect can be presented as recommendations or part of the ethical theories debate.
• Conclusion. Summarise the main aspects of the discussion with key emphasis on theories presented and analysed. The benefits to the sector could be highlighted.
