Motivation can come from many different places. Some people like to listen to music before and athletic event to get “pumped up.” Other people like to quote a phrase as a reminder why they are putting themselves through this ordeal. Money is a popular motivator for some people, as well as fear and love. Recently, I competed in a Half Ironman competition and I was not in the best “biking” shape, but I did the event anyways. During the run, my legs began to cramp up and the thoughts of quitting started to creep into my head. I began to repeat a statement in my head every time it started to hurt. I said, “Get off of the course as quick as possible.” Basically, I was telling myself the pain would stop the quicker I finished the race. The longer I stayed out there the more pain I would endure. I finished the race with that mantra on my lips all the way to the finish line. Writing a dissertation is similar to an endurance event. There will be moments you will want to stop and give up. What kind of phrases or prayers do you use to keep yourself going when things become hard? Can you share them with us and tell why they work for you? Answer in 150 words.
