Question
Elizabeth Anderson argues in Private Government: How Employers Rule Our Lives (and Why We Don't Talk About It) that most workplaces function like private dictatorships, where employers have almost total control over workers with little accountability. As Eric Dirnbach highlights in Why Is the Workplace Authoritarian?, employees often have no real say in the rules they follow, and quitting usually just means moving to another job with the same lack of democracy. This can make work feel stifling, especially for those in low-paying or unstable jobs where strict surveillance, arbitrary discipline, and minimal opportunities for advancement is the norm. A show like Severance takes this idea to the extreme, imagining a workplace where employees' memories are split between their work and personal lives, trapping their work selves in a never-ending cycle of labor. While it is a dystopian exaggeration, the show captures a real fear that employers have too much control over workers' lives both in and outside the office. Not every workplace needs to be fully democratic, but that does not mean workers should be powerless. Giving employees a stronger voice through unions, worker councils, or other forms of collective representation could create a better balance. A fairer workplace.
