"Modernization" is a theme that comes across throughout much of our class. What does this mean, and how is it enacted over time? Is it always equal to "westernization"? Is it always beneficial? Does it mean different things in different eras or different regions, and why? What are the conflicts involved in modernizing? Picking one location (Europe, Africa, Middle East, Asia), address how modernization manifests in the following three eras:

1. Pre-1914

2. During the wartime years (1914 - 1945

3. In the postwar (1945 - present) years.

You should use several specific examples for each time period. You may want to consider issues such as political changes, industrialization, civil rights, technology/industrialization, etc.
