Question

Listen to the Prologue of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales in the original Middle English. Now read the same part in in its Modern English translation. How many words from the original Middle English did you recognize? Could you understand the Middle English? English has changed a great deal since the 14th century. All living languages change, yet the "bones" of the language remain recognizable. What do you think will happen to English in the next few hundred years? What changes do you think will come to the language as a result of cultural or technological changes? Will future students of 21st century English be able to understand it like we can (almost) understand Chaucer?
