Mary Lynn has just taken a new job as a writer at a BK Media, a media company in New Jersey. This company has had a long-standing writers’ union for years, and now that Mary Lynn has been at the company for a week, she has been approached by the union to join. Mary Lynn has never joined a union before. Although she knows that the union is active at the company, no one is required to join, and those who don’t join don’t have to pay dues. However, those who don’t join are also precluded from voting when a new contract is proposed. As a workplace, Mary Lynn has been relatively happy at BK. She is satisfied with her salary, she likes the vacation policy, and she admits that the benefits there are great. She also recognizes that the contract expires in a year, and that means bargaining will begin again soon, which could result in a loss of the salary and benefits that she likes. That said, Mary Lynn is isn’t completely happy about every possible aspect of the work at BK – she’d like to see more women working at the company, and she would like better dental benefits, as her son is about to get braces! If she joins the union she will have to start paying dues, which will be a percentage of her take home pay; if she doesn’t join the union, it will be that much weaker going into bargaining and Mary Lynn won’t be able to vote on a proposed contract. What do you think Mary Lynn should do?
