Ethics: A Personal Perspective, Part II

In your first Learning Activity for week 1 you discussed some things that come to mind when you think of the word “ethics.” Over the course of the past 8 weeks, has your view or conception of ethics changed in any way? If yes, is there a specific moment you can identify and describe that triggered the change (a reading(s), or posting(s), discussion(s) with colleague(s) for example)? If your view or conception did not change, why do you think this is the case? How can what you learned in the course be applied in your professional and/or personal life?

Ethics: A Personal Perspective

How we perceive ethical issues and how we expect others to act is in many respects a reflection of our personal views. Considering the importance of our internal views of ethics, think about the following scenario:

You have been recently hired in the human resources department at the company you have always dreamed of working for. At the end of your first day, your manager, I.M. DeBoss, on her way out of the office says to you: “So Mr./Ms. Jones, what things come to mind when you think of the word 'ethics'?" Before you can answer, she asks you if you believe ethics are important for a company and if so why do you feel that way? Not letting up, because she is DeBoss, she then asks you if you think your views on ethics have evolved based on your life experiences or do you believe that your ethics DNA was established at birth and why?

Just as you are about to respond to her, she says “I am sorry Mr./Ms. Jones but I really have to run but I want to continue our conversation tomorrow.” You are relieved because you will have a night to ponder her questions and wow her with your responses tomorrow. How would you respond to your manager?

I would respond to my manager by saying ethics is a person’s moral principles and values. Ethics differs from each individual but there are standard right and wrongs that are established and understood by everyone. Ethics is very important for a company because it is how your customers, investors, and employers look at the company; without them there would not be a running business. My views on ethics has definitely changed as I matured through life. Employees should not ever indulge in unfair behavior that goes against the company. Employee should away practice the rules and regulations of the company. Ethically they should never promote biased growth of the employees professionally.
