A. Question checklist: does the author answer the following questions in their proposal?

Introduction

Research question

  • Why is this question interesting?
  • What have previous studies found about this topic, or related topics?
  • Is this a controversial topic? Is the question considered "settled"? Would additional research help?
  • What about your question did those studies not answer?
  • Is anything flawed about their methods, and what is different about the way you want to test it?

Methods

  • What are the independent/dependent variables?
  • How will you manipulate the independent variable?
  • How will you measure any changes in the dependent variable?
  • Are there any potential limitations inherent in your experimental design?
  • How will you eliminate any likely confounding variables?

Results

  • What are your expected results?
  • What conclusions would you be able to you draw from those results?
  • What implications might your results have for the world at large?

B. Review questions

Purpose

1. From your perspective, what is the problem being addressed/question being asked?

2. Is the problem clearly presented? If yes, how? If no, how could the writers clarify it?

3. Is the context for this research explained clearly? Where does it fit in with other research in this area? What makes it different, or what purpose does the research fill for the field?

4. Do you think the author needs more support for their research plan? What further evidence would you like to see that would help justify their proposed research direction?

Project Plan and Description

5. Is the proposed experiment capable of answering the question posed by the author? Why or why not? Is the research question too broad? If yes, how can the author make the question more specific?

6. Does the author explain why they selected the experimental methods? Do you think the author's explanation makes sense? If not, how could the writers improve their explanation?

7. Are there any changes to the proposed experiment that might help to answer the research question more effectively, or more completely? If so, what changes would you suggest?

8. Are there any major confounding variables that the author has not controlled for, that you think have a high likelihood of affecting the results? Try not to nitpick-make sure you are considering only relevant confounds. In human research, it is impossible to control for every single thing!

9. Are the author's conclusions/implications fully justified by their expected results? Do the expected results really mean what the author claims they mean (within reason)? What would it mean if they got the opposite result?

Feasibility

10. What materials, resources, or locations would be needed to conduct this experiment?

11. If given all these resources, do you think the experiment could be conducted in the real world? If not, why?

12. Would it be possible to conduct this experiment in the classroom, using your classmates as subjects? Why or why not?

Writing

1. Is the language (word choice, tone, construction) professional, concise, and scientific? If yes, how? If no, what should the writers do to improve the writing style?

2. Does the author strike a good balance between being conservative about the implications for the research, while also sparking general interest? If not, which way does the author tend to lean? How can they correct this?

3. Are there excessive spelling and grammar mistakes? If yes, please mark specific examples on the document. What grammatical mistakes do you see the author making most frequently? What would be a solution?

4. General Comments: What is your overall impression of this proposal? What could the writers do to improve their proposal?
