My Dream Job: Mental Health Nurse PRACTITIONER

Rational: During my clinical Placements, almost all client/patient were on some sort of antidepressants or psychotic medications. Therefore my interest of working as General Surgical Nurse has shifted to Mental Health Nursing.

What is a personal development plan (PDP)?

The PDP is a tool to assist in planning your career for your future practice and is designed to facilitate both your personal and professional growth by:-

establishing individual learning goals related to your professional practice by aligning your goals with the RN Domains for the registered nurse or midwife or similar
developing personalized strategies /performance criteria for achieving those goals

Developing your learning goals-

Developing your learning goals is a personal and unique process. The goals you establish should be individualized to your own needs and focused on what you want to achieve over the next 5-10 years of practice.

Learning goals might include:-

improving your knowledge of a specific topic, policy, procedure
achieving competence in clinical skills or use of specific equipment or technology
identifying a post graduate course of study
improving communication skills with the interdisciplinary team and patients
managing complex patient care situations

As you begin to develop your learning goals ask yourself the following questions:

Are my goals clearly stated?
Do they adequately describe what I intend to learn?
Are my learning goals realistic and achievable?
