The components of the sample other than the analyte makes up the "matrix" of the analyte. If the matrix of our sample does not match that of our standards, then the signals may not match even if the concentrations of quinine are identical. When the matrix enhances or diminishes the signal intensity of an analyte, the analyte is said to be experiencing "matrix effects". List some examples of matrix effects that are relevant to spectrofluorometry, and explain why standard addition helps overcome matrix effects.
