Leadership is a state of mind and a way of thinking about your interactions with your world. The emphasis of this module is on your reflective journey on your own leadership. Start by thinking about when you first saw yourself as a leader. In other words, when did you first realise that you were influencing other people around you including that other people were looking to you for guidance, ideas, approval or endorsement? In this first module, we look at the basic concepts and definitions of leadership. We challenge one of the concepts that you may hold that leadership is only about those people at the top of organisational or societal structures. Different definitions of leadership are provided for your consideration and to encourage you to think more deeply about what leadership means to you. We look at the complex, dynamic and subtle relationship between leaders and followers. Different models of leadership development are introduced to guide your reflections on your own leadership and to provide frameworks for preparing a comprehensive plan for your personal and professional development through this subject and beyond. During this first module, you will start your reflective journal to deepen your thinking about your own leadership experiences and potential, you will be assigned a partner from the student group, with whom you will build a mentoring relationship and you will complete a psychometric assessment to gain feedback on your leadership strengths. This is the start of a deeply reflective, thought-provoking and potentially life-changing journey of self-discovery and personal growth. This Module will help you achieve the following outcomes: a) Explore and reflect on self- development as a leader to build self-awareness. b) Through critical reflection on key leadership theories develop a personal leadership development strategy. e) Demonstrate the technique of reflective and reflexive practice as a means of continuous learning and self-development. This Module will cover: Leadership concepts and definitions Leadership and followership Learning to be a leader Models of leadership development Establishing a mentoring relationship with another student First reflections on your own leadership strengths and capability Time Management Student workload expectation is 10 hours per week or 20 hours for the two weeks allocated for Module 1. 3 hours per week are required for participation in class activities, and participation in discussion forums or Collaborate sessions 4 hours per week are required for personal study: reading and viewing resources, self-directed and collaborative online learning activities. 3 hours per week are required for commencing your reflective journal, establishing a mentoring relationship with your partner and completing the Gallup Strengths Assessment. Assessment Progression: You will need to start work on the first assessment in this module. Assessment 1, Part A, is due at the end of Week 3. It is a reflection on your current leadership capabilities, using the Gallup Strengths Finder. The first steps in the assessment process are: 1) post your personal introduction on the Welcome and Introductions Discussion Forum; 2) commence your reflective journal; 3) prepare a statement on your leadership journey for exchange with your partner; 4) complete the Gallup Strengths Finder. These activities will require approximately 4 hours. Class Expectation: Participate in all scheduled face-to-face classes, on-line discussion forums or Collaborate sessions. This time is intended to be used by students and their lecturer to work through activities and engage in discussion about the weekly content. These sessions provide a space for students to raise questions and seek guidance on writing their assessments. Students will review and explore more deeply the information presented in the learning material. Students are also expected to have worked through the learning material for this module before attending the class – this enables informed discussion and full participation in learning activities.
