Real-World Case 7.2: ABC Hospital was recently purchased by a large integrated delivery system (IDS). The IDS is primarily based in a large metro area. However, ABC Hospital is located in a smaller city within the same state. It is the only healthcare provider owned by the IDS in this small town. ABC Hospital and the IDS utilize two different EHRs. The HIM director knows she has a lot of work ahead of her in transitioning to the EHR used by the IDS. To prepare for this change and immediately address the needs of current patients at ABC Hospital, the director has a first objective to transition the existing MPI to the IDS enterprise MPI (EMPI). A multidisciplinary team was created to include representatives from clinical and administrative departments. The team must determine a plan to merge ABC Hospital's MPI data into the IDS EMPI. They will need to present this information at the next executive board meeting. At a minimum, the HIA director plans to report on the date of implementation, a training schedule, and the expected effects on department staff, including departments beyond HIM.
