Text: E. Bellamy, Looking Backward, excerpts.
Question
1. It's easy to assume that Bellamy was a radical socialist, calling for a violent revolution against capitalism, akin to what Karl Marx advocated in The Communist Manifesto (1848). How does part 1 show that's not the case; that Bellamy wasn't predicting violent revolution? As always, be specific (GCc).
2. Relate parts 2-3 of the text to Module 2's theme: the struggle to combine liberty from community, with liberty through community. Include 1+ example from both parts (GCc, GCd).
3. Relate part 5 of the text to today's economy. What did Bellamy anticipate correctly, and what did he get wrong? (GCc).
4. A common argument against socialism is that it deprives people of the impetus to work hard. Dr. Leete addresses this at length in parts 4 and 6 of the text. What are his solutions to the problem? What do you think? (GCc, GCd).
5. Is the political system (elections, etc.) described in the final part more liberating than our own? How might one argue yes, and how might one argue no?
