SWOT Analysis of Procter & Gamble (PG, NYSE)

Strengths

When looking at strengths, evaluating a company's assets is essential. The easiest way is to evaluate a set of questions.

  • What does the company own?
  • Do they have plants? Are they located in multiple locations?
  • Do they have patents?
  • How much cash do they have available?
  • What is the strength of their customer base?
  • What is their reputation?
  • Are they hiring?
  • How long have they been around?
  • Are they innovative?
  • What do they do better than anyone else?
  • Do they have a strong culture?
  • Do they have strong leadership?

A number of these items can be found in news stories. From a financial standpoint, use the notes section of the 10K, which is usually after the list of financials. Take a look at their profit margin. From a customer standpoint, look at the social media analysis tools. Are they hiring on the website or on a search firm like Indeed? Take a good look at their CEO and their board of directors.

Weakness

This is looking at the opposite spectrum of Strengths. Look at all the questions in the Strength section and ask what aspects they are doing poorly.

  • What is limiting the success of the company?
  • What criticisms are coming out about the company
  • Is leadership being criticized?
  • Are they facing lawsuits?
  • Do they lack a social media presence?
  • If you were a consumer, would you buy their product or services?

Opportunity

Opportunities are focused on the larger market.

  • Are competitors struggling, and is your company in a stronger position?
  • Is there a gap in the marketplace that the company can seize?
  • Are there opportunities to diversify?
  • Is the market growing?
  • Where does the company stand in the competitive marketplace? In control? In growth position?
  • Will the current economy assist growth activities?
  • Are there positive trends in the marketplace?

Threats

Just as strengths and weaknesses share the same questions, so do Opportunities and Threats.

  • Is the economy in decline?
  • Is the market over-saturated?
  • Are competitors at an advantage over the company?
  • Are there regulatory pressures limiting the ability to grow?
  • Is changing technology threatening the company?
  • Are there cash flow problems limiting growth opportunities?
  • Are any of the weaknesses listed earlier threatening the growth potential?
  • Are there changes to the price of raw materials limiting growth?
  • Has there been a change in customer shopping trends?
