Introduction to Comparative Politics

Assignment: Your personal reflection is your mental doorway into the class. Sometimes we get into the habit of thinking of classes as a requirement we need to fill or another three credits on our transcript, but this mindset can make it a lot harder to engage with the material and can lead to burnout. So instead, I'm giving you an opportunity to think about what you know about politics in other countries, what you'd like to know, and what your expectations are for the course. Use the questions provided below to guide your response.

Guiding questions:

1. Have you ever taken a class in comparative politics before? If not, what's the most closely related class you've taken that you can think of?

2. What kinds of things do you expect to learn in this class?

3. Think of a policy or issue that gets treated differently in another country (or countries) than is does in the United States:

  • Describe the difference between how the issue is treated here vs. in the other country (or countries).
  • Why is it different?
  • What kinds of impacts could this difference have on people's lives?

Not required to have a research for this assignment-this is about you and your experience taking the class. As long as you put some thought into your answer, meet the length requirement, and turn it in on time, you should receive full credit!
