According to Janet Sigal's "International Sexual Harassment", sexual harassment is defined as "unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitute sexual harassment when this conduct explicitly or implicitly affects an individual's employment, unreasonably interferes with an individual's work performance, or creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive work environment" (2006). As for the discussion of the topic this week, the sexual harassment allegations made against Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas by Professor Anita Hill highlights the reality of what goes on with such cases. Anita Hill testified, in 1991, that Supreme Court nominee Clarence Hill had sexually harassed her while she was working as an advisor to him. The senate grilled Hills with out of pocket questions, knowing that she was claiming to be sexually harassed. The senate ended up voting in Thomas with a 52-48 vote, which subsequently followed up with Hill receiving many death threats due to the publicity of the case. Many people also reached out to Hill, telling her how they can relate with what she had went through; this made hill feel more at ease through the knowledge that she was not going through this alone (Gross, 2021).
