Jones et al. (2017) writes, "Intercultural competence is having the ability to appropriately interact effectively in intercultural situations. . ." (p. 4). Being a leader will inevitably involve working with those who have different backgrounds than you. In order to be an effective leader, you have to be able to develop some level of self-awareness and reflect. One of the hardest parts about this level of self-awareness is that you have to be able to identify your own bias. Once you commit to intercultural responsiveness and intentionally seek opportunities to understand other cultures and the way that others experience the world around them, you will not only grow as a leader, but you will pave the way for your team to do the same.
