INFLUENCING PRACTICE CASE STUDY 50 Influencing Through Questions Directions: Often you can influence others by aligning your request with the other person’s beliefs and values. If you sense disagreement, asking open-ended questions can help you understand the other person’s beliefs and values. As you read the case study, look for facts you can confirm, beliefs or opinions of those involved, and underlying values (desires, wants) of the claims manager and claims processors. Then write open-ended questions to clarify beliefs and values. The disability insurance claims manager has been told to reduce the average time it takes to process a claim by 10 percent. The claims manager tells the processors they will need to come up with a more efficient way to process claims in the department. The claims manager is under pressure to do more with less. The claims processors think this search for efficiency is a waste of time and there is little room for improvement inside the department. The processors admit they are doing some duplicate work and a few efficiencies can be achieved here. Waiting for information from the insured and/or the investigators who do not provide claim and policy information in a timely manner causes most of the delays. The manager is hesitant to put pressure on customers or investigators because he thinks this could slow things down even more. 1.
