Throughout the early 1800's the influence of industrialization and the repeated subjugation of Native Indians and slaves caused people to reflect on their role in society and attempt to reform elements of their daily lives. In the wake of political opposition to expansion and the issue of slavery the people of the United States turned to the question of social reform in an effort to define what it was to be an American on a personal level. Religious reform movements tried to reconcile with monetary needs and spirituality, people sought alternative solutions to social equality through community experiments and healing the mind and body while the issue of slavery began to take on a new victim marked by the first American feminist movement. These social issues became part of the new agenda for the American people and their agendas remains a constant element in society even today.
