EPA studies of fuel consumption indicate the fuel economy of compact cars is approximately normally distributed with a mean of 31.5 miles per gallon and a standard deviation of 5.7 miles per gallon. The fuel economy of large cars is approximately normally distributed with a mean of 26.3 miles per gallon and standard deviation of 5.1 miles per gallon.
