Internal validity reflects the study's ability to prove the changes found in the dependent variable are consistently and reliably due to the independent variable and not from confounding variables. Achieving this validity reflects accurate and replicable results. External validity is achieved when a study's results can be generalized across subjects, settings, and behaviors. This validity displays the generalizable application of the intervention because similar results are found when the same procedures are used across different settings, subjects, and behaviors. Lastly social validity is achieved by providing results that are important, ethical, and meaningful to the target population. An example of social validity in research is facilitating experiments to determine the most effective functional communication interventions, as enhancing communication skills for individuals with autism is important to individuals with autism and their families.
