This week we study teamwork. Whether you are a member of a traditional work team, a self-managed team, or a virtual team, a team charter is critical.
As far as the traditional work team is concerned, Kinicki and Fugate say, "When working in teams, most students and employees hurry into the task at hand. While this works sometimes, social scientists and OB professionals have identified a better approach. They recommend that individuals in the team create team charters that detail members' mutual expectations about how the team will operate, allocate resources, resolve conflict, and meet its commitments" (Kinicki & Fugate, 2016, p. 296).
As students with the University of Phoenix, you have the opportunity of creating learning team charters for many of your classes. Based upon watching learning teams function in the classroom environment, I have the following observations related to charters.
· Importance of a charter cannot be overemphasized.
· The quality of everything that follows is based upon the charter.
· Nearly everything that follows depends on thought put into charter team members put into the charter.
· Team can better deal with normal conflict.
· Members consciously work to improve the effectiveness of the current team based upon the charter.
What have been your experiences with team charters in the academic environment and the business environment?
