Assignment:

In 500 words or more please identify at least three ways you became more religiously literate about Islam this week from your reading of Chapter - "The Keeper of the Keys: Muhammad in Mecca" in Dr. Reza Aslan's book No God But God. Please provide your answers using the following formula:

Before this reading/film, I thought W, then the reading/film depicted X (quote it), so I realized Y, which is important because Z. Please note that Y should connect either to the definition of religious literacy or concepts of religious literacy explained in the PDF, and Z should connect to the relevance of that particular religious literacy concept to your life.

Conclude your Discussion Board Post by answering at least one of the questions below. You may answer both if you wish:

  • How was Aslan's scholarly view of a specific event in the life of Prophet Muhamad different than the more general film's view of that same event? What did you learn from Aslan's account of the same event that you did not learn from the animated biography about this event?
  • What did Aslan include in this week's chapter that was completely omitted by the film that you feel is important for your classmates to know? Why do you feel this is important?

Requirements:

  • Please use "I-statements" in your answer and speak only for yourself, rather than groups that you belong to (or other groups that you don't belong to).
  • The animated biography covers the entire life of Prophet Muhammad whereas this week's reading in Aslan only covers up to the Hijrah. If you wish, you can stop watching the documentary when it gets to the Hijrah (when Muhammad migrates from Mecca to Yathrib/Medina).
  • Please do not include observations that you feel both Aslan and the animated biography omit: please just stick to Aslan!
  • If you make three observations but still haven't reached 500 words, feel free to make four, or five, or...you get the picture!
  • Support your answer with at least three citations from Reza Aslan.
  • Support your answer with at least three citations from the animated film at the end of the module.

A reminder about citations:

  • For the sake of ease and visibility, please place your quotes in italics and list the page number. Citation Example: As Aslan says, "This man is no priest; he is not even a Kahin. He is someone far more important. He is a Quraysh: a member of the powerful, fabulously wealthy tribe that had settled in Mecca centuries earlier and who are now known throughout Arabia as ahl Allah: 'the Tribe of God,' the Wardens of the Sanctuary" (24).
  • No God but God (Updated Edition): The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam by Reza Aslan.
