Assignment:

For the first part of your assignment, you must view and analyze the Youtube video. Submit a write-up answering the following questions. You may need to view it multiple times to gather the information required to answer the following questions:

1. You are required by law to follow the guidelines of 3 agencies in the area you are teaching in. Who are these 3 agencies?
2. There are many reasons that a teacher may be fired in relation to issues that occur on social media. What are at least 3 of the reasons discussed in the video?
3. What are the 5 guidelines for effective online professionalism?

For part two of your assignment: you will research cases where social media and teacher professionalism have been an issue. (Do not pull from the examples on page 210 of our text).

*An example would be: Case vs. O'Brien- Jennifer O'Brien was a first grade teacher in Paterson, N.J., teaching a class made up entirely of minority students. She posted on her Facebook page that she was "a warden for future criminals" not a teacher and that her first graders should go to a "scared straight program." These posts drew the attention of the administration, as well as parents, the public, and the press. O'Brien was suspended with pay and eventually removed from her tenured teaching position

• Identify the social media case study and give an overview. (Give the formal name of the case. Be sure to cite the resource where the case was found online or in a text.)
• What actions caused the teacher to be investigated? What are the basics (incidents investigated, etc) of the case?
• Was the teacher fired/suspended/reinstated? What laws/guidelines does the court/school/district have that supports the decision?
• Do you agree/disagree with the courts/schools decision? A text reference from chapter 8 must be included.
