What ideas stood out to me? Why?
Then start developing your ideas. Ask yourself:
What do I know about the issues/topics discussed in the readings? Where does my existing knowledge come from? What are the experiences or observations that shape my understanding?
Do I agree or disagree with the authors' arguments? Why?
Make connections. Ask yourself:
How do the texts reinforce OR challenge my existing ideas and assumptions?
How do the texts help me to better understand the topics/issues or explore media/communication history?
Organizing your critical response paper
Introduction (1 paragraph): Begin by stating two to three concepts/issues/themes that stood out to you as you read the articles and or book chapters and provide brief reasons why they stood out to you.
Explanation of the concepts/issues/themes (2 to 3 paragraphs): Provide a description of the concepts/issues/themes. Explain how these concepts/issues/themes relate to one another -highlight the connection(s).
Critical reflection (2 to 4 paragraphs): Provide your critical reflection of those concepts/issues/themes. Consider the following questions: Do you agree or disagree with the authors' arguments? Do the authors provide a thorough explanations of the key concepts? How do the texts reinforce OR challenge my existing ideas and assumptions?
How do the texts help me to better understand the topics/issues or explore media/communication history?
Conclusion (1 paragraph): Summarize your paper. What is the takeaway from reading the articles/book chapters and critically analyzing them?
