The concept of liberty is one that is deeply embedded in American political thought. Review the speeches of Patrick Henry. Discuss the concept of liberty as expressed by Henry, the Sons of Liberty, and John Adams. The Loyalists also exercised the concept of liberty, yet these Americans were chastised and terrorized for their loyalty to the British Crown. Equally, the claim that "all men are created equal" did not apply to the ten thousand enslaved African Americans who died pursuing freedom alongside white colonial slaveholders.

The concept of liberty holds a significant place in American political philosophy, dating back to the American Revolution. Patrick Henry emphasized liberty as synonymous with independence and individual freedom. He advocated for the colonists' right to govern themselves and be free from British oppression. Henry even espouses that he is willing to put his life in mortal danger for this concept of liberty in the title of his infamous "Give Me Liberty, or Give Me Death". To readers, this book would provide them with the courage to speak out against what they felt to be tyranny. To pursue freedom.
Similarly, the Sons of Liberty, a secret society formed to protest British rule, viewed liberty as an inherent right of every individual. They actively fought against British imperialism, engaging in acts of resistance that demonstrated their commitment to preserving liberty through direct action and civil disobedience.
I see this as very ironic considering that many of the people who fought to pursue their freedom, were more than comfortable depriving others of theirs. The English subjugation of the colonies, in the eyes of Henry, is comparable to slavery. "What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God!" (Henry IV). The discrepancy between the assertion that "all men are created equal," and the existence of slavery cannot be overlooked. Despite the participation of approximately ten thousand enslaved African Americans in the pursuit of freedom alongside white colonial slaveholders, the ideal of equality did not extend to them.
To many political voices of the time, liberty was synonymous with notions of individual freedom, self-governance, and the rule of natural law. However, the treatment of Loyalists and the exclusion of enslaved African Americans from the promises of liberty reveal the complexities and contradictions that existed during the American Revolution.
