Assignment:

Gabriella is a 1 year female with a diagnosis of tetralogy of fallot. As a newborn, she underwent a cardiac catheterization to make a hole between the atria (upper 2 chambers of the heart) and creation of a shunt to create blood flow to the lungs. This allows the child to have adequate oxygenation during the early part of life. This procedure was completed without complications and very little blood loss. She now needs to have the final corrective surgery in which blood loss is expected. Surgery is required as the shunt will not be adequate to allow oxygenation of the blood as Gabriella grows older. The family are Jehovah Witness.
