Assignment:
I am needing help with my theory paper for intro to sociology.
We have to identify sociological concepts covered in class (Karl Marx, Emile Durkhiem, Max Weber, Charlottle Gilman, Georg Simmel and WEB Du Bois), provide sociological definitions, and apply them to social issues presented in film (documentary and/or fiction).
We need to link concepts from sociological theorists to concrete examples in the films that you have chosen. It is important to be clear, do every part of the assignment, and to show that you have a depth of understanding of your chosen concepts.
1. Introduction
• First, introduce your paper by telling the reader which concepts you will be focusing on, and what theorist they come from. Use a minimum of two concepts (which can be drawn from multiple theorists). Second, include a definition for each concept mentioned in the introduction and any that will be applied later in the paper (be sure to provide an in-text citation for these). If you introduce or apply concepts later in the paper without introducing them or defining them, you will lose points.
Finally, provide an example for each concept-not related to the chosen film (and that does not come from the book or lecture)-that clearly illustrates what the concepts mean.
2. Summary of Film
• Provide a concise, no longer than two-paragraph overview of the film, highlighting the parts that are important to understanding the application in your paper. You do not need to provide a detailed description of everything that happened in the film. Enough information should be included so that it is not necessary to see the film to understand your paper. This should be much shorter than the application part.
3. Application
• Apply the concepts one at a time (remember to bring it back to the definition) to specific examples in your film. At least two supporting examples for each concept 13 should be used. "Specific" means using direct quotes or detailed descriptions of things depicted in the film. These quotes or descriptions need to illustrate your chosen concepts. Do not assume that simply mentioning the concept and the example together in a sentence together constitutes application-it is up to you to make the link between the two. You need to explain how your example illustrates the concept; bringing in the definition is quite useful here, but word it in a way that is your own.
• Since it is very possible that the theoretical concepts do not completely or perfectly apply to the film, you should also describe the theory's short-comings for understanding the film. Are there aspects in which the theoretical concepts do not seem totally appropriate for or capable of explaining aspects of the film? In other words, distinguish between how well the theory can be applied. Adhere strictly to the original meaning, ideas, and intentions of the theorists and their concepts.
• This section constitutes most of the points for this paper, so make sure you understand these instructions and what is expected, and take adequate time to really make sure that you have applied the concepts introduced earlier in the paper.
4. Conclusion
• End with a brief summary of what you see as the main points of the paper, and any thoughts, understanding, or knowledge that you gained
5. References - format it according to the American Sociological Association Style Guide, which can be found on the ASA website. Examples will be provided in class, upon demand. The films need not be themselves cited. Every piece of information that is not your own idea or researched fact must be cited. An in-text citation must follow any chunk of information in your writing, including the author's last name and the year it was written in parentheses. All full-text citation must be listed at the end.
