Prioritizing Needs & Analysis
This is the last step before completing your final Community Needs Assessment Project. You will focus on analyzing your research thus far, identifying the needs of your chosen community, and prioritizing those needs based on community input and their severity and urgency. You will analyze your research (including relevant feedback from the community) to identify your chosen community's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT analysis). Carefully review research, including demographic data, socioeconomic factors, existing resources, and community & stakeholder feedback for the City of Columbus, Georgia, Muscogee County.
Develop and organize a comprehensive list in paragraph format of needs as you see fit, using a SWOT analysis. Suggested categories are:
- Public services (fire station, police department, schools, libraries, etc.)
- Education (access to quality education, early childhood development, adult literacy programs)
- Health services (access to healthcare, mental health services, substance abuse treatment)
- Housing (availability of affordable housing, homelessness, housing quality)
- Social and human services (support for vulnerable populations, food security, access to social services)
- Economic development (job creation, business development, economic opportunities)
- Environmental concerns (pollution, access to green spaces, sustainability initiatives)
- Community communication (access to information, community engagement, civic participation)
Prioritize needs based on research findings, which will identify severity, urgency, and reveal community input.
- Severity: How severe is the need? Who is impacted, and in what ways?
- Urgency: How urgent is it to address the need? What are the potential consequences of inaction? Be aware that most inaction is continued inaction.
- Community Input: What are the perspectives of community members and stakeholders?
Explain the rationale for prioritizing specific needs over others. This could involve using data, community feedback, or expert opinions to support your decisions. This is where your implicit bias work comes in! Cite all credible sources used
