Assignment:

Final Project: Research of a Particular Immigrant Group in the United States: Their History, Stories, Struggles, and Contribution

5 Steps:

1. Identify a particular immigrant group based on your Family Tree ( African Family) Exercise for your focus on this assignment. (If you are 1st generation or an international student, this can be you.)

2. Gather stories by doing some qualitative research on your immigrant group:Contact one of your relatives and ask them to share information and stories about what they know about family's history and lineage. When did they come to the U.S.? Why? What do they know of the journey to this country?

Note: if you are an international student ( Africa student) or 1st generation living in the US, I'd like you to tell your story of coming to this country. When did you come? If you were born here, where did your parents come from and when? What has been your experience as an international student or 1st generation American? How do you think your experience differs from others in our class - 2nd and 3rd generation students? What have been some of the significant communication challenges you have faced?

3. Do some quantitative research: investigate the history of your immigrant group's history in the U.S. I'd like you to use sources other than just a quick Google search. What did you learn in your research? For example, when did your immigrant group first come of the US? Why did they come? What do you know of their journey to come to the US? What is the current population of your particular immigrant group? Where have they mostly settled? (This research applies to the whole class.)

Your paper must include at least 3 research sources. Make sure to cite your sources in the body of your paper: (No works cited page required.)

Include in your research the dates when your particular immigrant group first came to the United States;

Any specific social, economic, or cultural challenges this group faced; and

c. Their unique contribution to this country's development.

Include at least three well-developed paragraphs that incorporate the material from the ADRESSING model (Pamela Hays) covered in class and address the following four prompts:

• How were you or your particular immigrant group or indigenous group treated by the majority population at the time (white, northern-European, Christian groups) based on the Hay's framework of agent/target status?
• How has this new awareness of how some groups were given "white status" or privilege affected you or your particular immigrant group's ability to successfully function in this country?
• How did this new knowledge affect you as a culturally-sensitive citizen? Create greater empathy for others?
• What is your thinking now about your own status as an immigrant to this country and what it means to be an "American"?
