Q1) At Ajax Spring Water, a half litre bottle of soft drink is assumed to contain a mean of 520 ml. Filling process permits normal distribution with known process standard deviation of 4 ml.

Requirement1:

Normal distribution must be used for sample mean because:

a) Population distribution is known to be normal

b) Standard deviation is very small.

c) Population standard deviation is known

d) Sample population has large mean

 Requirement 2:

Set up hypothesis and two-tailed decision rule for right mean using 5% level of significance. Hypothesis for a two-tailed decision is:

a) H0: μ ≠520, H1: μ = 520, reject if -1.96<. z <1.96

b) H0: μ = 520, H1: μ ≠ 520, reject if z > 1.96 or z < -1.96.

c) H0: μ =520, H1: μ ≠ 520, reject if -1.96<. z <1.96

d) H0: μ ≠520, H1: μ = 520, reject if z > 1.96 or z < -1.96

If sample of 16 bottles illustrates a mean fill of 515 ml, does this contradict hypothesis that true mean is 520 ml?

i) Yes

ii) No
