As we have been discussing in class and in our readings, one of the main objectives of Management Theory is to understand how business processes and human behavior in organizations can be subjected to control.
For this assignment, I'd like you to do the following:
1) Visit any large retail establishment such as a fast food restaurant, a department store, a grocery, or something like that. Spend at least half an hour observing the employees at work. Try to figure out the visible/evident ways in which their behavior is controlled (for example, you could try and see if they are being supervised in any way or if they seem to have specific tasks). Think about whether there are any other ways in which their behavior might be controlled that is not obvious to a casual observer (for example, do they have targets/incentives?). Recall the various ways in which the workers on the factory floor in "Modern Times" were being controlled. Do you see any modern equivalent of that?
2) If you are employed currently or have been employed in the past, describe the ways in which your own behaviour is/was controlled.
Your initial post must be at least 500 words long. Comment on at least one other post. You comment must be at least 150 words long. Include a word count with both your own post and your comment.
