Scenarios:
A) Sophie: Sophie is a 13 year old Mexican American who smokes marijuana several times a day, shoplifts regularly and engages in unprotected sex with multiple partners. Her parents allow her to come and go as she pleases and on many occasions give her no curfew for coming home at night. It is not clear how much Sophie's parents know about her activities. Sophie says her parents know what she has been doing, but at the same time she does not want you or anyone else to discuss these issues with them.
B) Patrick is a 30 year old who suffers from depression. He states that he has been drinking "a lot more lately" and feels like life is spiraling down for him. His landlord also recently threatened to kick him out because he has been late on his rent. Patrick just lost his job earlier this month and you know he is actively looking for employment. Your agency has a strict policy about clients not using substances while a client, but you really feel like Patrick needs to stay in the program to get back on track. You are not an expert on substance abuse, but have taken some workshops on depression.
