Assignment: HISTORY INTERVIEW PROJECT

The purpose of this project is to interview someone (and/or yourself) on the subject of living in and adapting to the "state" of California. Please remember to emphasize attitudes and issues concerning racial/ethnic realities/myths and typical experiences in daily life. The interview can be in question/answer or essay form and must consist of at least six double spaced pages (12 font).

SOME QUESTIONS AND IDEAS THAT COULD BE USED TO GUIDE THE INTERVIEW.

Why did you choose this person?

Why and for how long have they lived in California?

What were their reasons for and expectations about coming to California? What ethnic/racial group and tradition in CA. do they most identify with?

Is citizenship important to you?

How would you define "good citizenship"?

Do you belong to any civic organizations or attend any meetings about community/state issues?

Do you belong to any organizations or clubs organized around your ethnic/racial identity?

Do you vote regularly and what is your opinion about the state government?

What is your attitude toward increased immigration both foreign and domestic into the state?

What about the issue of expecting residents/workers to be fluent in English? How do you rate the educational system in CA? Any suggestions?

What things currently please or bother you about life in California?

Define racism. Have you ever had a "racist" experience while living in CA.?

Adding your own responses to the person being interviewed can enhance this assignment and add to our understanding of the complexities of life in California and what it will take to establish a supportive and successful society that can include everyone.
